SUMMARY:Muriel’s Wedding: From Cult to Classic: ‘90s on Film
DESCRIPTION:Socially awkward Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) wants nothing more than to get married. Unfortunately\, thanks to her oppressive politician father (Bill Hunter)\, Muriel has never even been on a date. Ostracised by her more socially adept friends\, Muriel runs into fellow outcast Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths)\, and the two move from their nowhere town of Porpoise Spit to the big city of Sydney\, where Muriel begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to match her fantasies. \n\n \n\n"Funny\, strange and\, best of all\, graced with strong human compassion." The Hollywood Reporter \n\n \n\nFrom Cult to Classic: '90s on Film Season\n\nThroughout the month of June\, Triskel Arts Centre presents a selection of notable films from the '90s\, both bonafide classics as well as movies that developed a following as the years progressed. There's the epic heist thriller HEAT starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro\; the wonderfully quirky Australian comedy MURIEL'S WEDDING which introduced the world to Toni Collette\; Paul Verhoeven's hyperbolic SHOWGIRLS which was a flop back in 1995 but has since become a hugely popular cult movie\; the angry French social drama LA HAINE starring Vincent Cassel\; and Oliver Stone's acclaimed music biopic THE DOORS\, which will be screened as a tribute to its late star Val Kilmer.
