Cliodhna Timoney wants to provoke a visceral, immediate and intimate experience with the viewer. A visual artist currently based in Donegal, she believes drawing can be used as an archive for emotions, experiences and as a tool for accumulating information from a variety of sources such as the history of painting or pop culture. Her solo exhibition opens in Triskel Gallery Space on Thursday 5 July at 6pm and includes objects that are spontaneous, anxious and provisional.
Timoney said, “I think about my work in a bodily way, how we communicate and interact with material and how objects too can speak with one another. I misappropriate a lot of familiar objects, removing their function so they become an intimate visual, sensuous experience.”
Her practice is a playful exploration of these traditions and through an abstract vocabulary she aspires to create objects that have a quality of spontaneity and imperfection within them. Drawing and markmaking are fundamental in her practice. They are an archive of memories, everyday experiences and emotions. Timoney continued, “My sculptures are extensions of these drawings. Allowing drawing to enrich the object and contrariwise. Chancing failure and accidents I permit the materials to manifest themselves into tactile, haptic almost delectable objects.”
Recently awarded the Felix Slade Scholarship, Timoney will move to London in September to study at the Slade School of Fine Art.
This is the first exhibition chosen by the Triskel40 panel: Emily O'Flynn, Tactic Gallery; Padráig Spillane, Sternview Gallery; and Tina Darb, Triskel Arts Centre.
Cliodhna Timoney’s exhibition runs from 5 July until 28 September in Triskel Gallery Space. For more information, visit www.triskelartscentre.ie or phone 021-4272022.
