Dr Kieran Murphy joins Cognate Health to lead new aviation medical service

Cognate Health has announced the appointment of aviation medicine specialist Dr Kieran Murphy as an Occupational Health Provider to lead its new aviation medical service. Dr Murphy is a qualified pilot with 330 flight hours and has been a practicing aviation medical examiner since 1998. This new specialist service from Cognate Health, a leading nationwide occupational health provider, offers renewals and revalidations for pilots, cabin crew, air traffic control and flight service officers.

Dr Murphy graduated from University College Cork in 1978 and practiced as a GP before entering aviation medicine. He has been a member of the Irish Society of Aviation Medicine since 1995, trained as an Aviation Medical Examiner in 1997, and undertook further training in 2007 to allow him to deliver Class 1 renewals.

On his appointment, Dr Murphy said: “I am delighted to join an innovative company like Cognate Health as it creates new pathways of delivering critically important health services to a range of industries. This is a crucial time for the aviation sector as the industry recovers from the pandemic and begins to rebuild. From pilots to air traffic controllers, it is important that everyone in the industry has up-to-date medical certificates, so they are ready to work as the aviation industry grows again in the coming months. Cognate Health’s new service will assist with this, offering greater choice and convenience for many aviation personnel.”

His appointment comes in response to Cognate Health’s rapid growth, with the company recruiting nine additional practitioners and nurses in 2021 and growing its client base by 35%.

Paula Cogan, CEO of Cognate Health said: “At such an important time for the aviation industry, we are pleased to be adding someone of Kieran’s calibre to our team as we introduce aviation medicals to our suite of occupational health services. With air travel rapidly recovering after the pandemic, demand for aviation medicals is increasing and, with Kieran on board, we are looking forward to helping the industry get back up to full speed.”
