Cork Chamber President Bill O’Connell highlights the growing anticipation of the Cork business community for the publication of the Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.
In commenting, Mr. O’Connell stated, “The Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy has been signalled as a game-changer for Cork, a precursor to significant public transport infrastructure and network investment on a scale never before seen in Cork. Though the publication has been delayed quite significantly at this stage, we are very hopeful that a robust, ambitious and comprehensive strategy has been developed for Cork. This is the opportunity for Cork as Ireland’s fastest growing City to plan proactively to meet our full potential and to enable Cork’s transition to a sustainable European city of scale.”
Mr. O’Connell added, “The Cork business and wider community will need clarity and transparency around the delivery timelines for the projects included within the Transport Strategy, as well as all major infrastructure projects in the pipeline. All you need do is look at the Cork City skyline and you can see the growth happening all around. Right now, 70% of commuters in Cork commute using private personal vehicles. This cannot continue. We need to be creating an environment that offers opportunities and choice for commuters and residents alike in how we access, and travel within and around the Cork Metropolitan Area. There is an urgency in moving these projects from a strategy to shovel ready projects. Now is the time to be proactive.”
In concluding, Mr. O’Connell commented, “This strategy is the opportunity to plan for a city whose population is set to double and to keep Cork moving. We are in a very exciting phase of Cork’s history and it is absolutely crucial that we invest without further delay in developing a public transport infrastructure and network that works for Cork.” -Ends-
