On Sunday 10th April at 3pm, The Mardyke will play host to a re-enactment of the 1916 Munster Hurling Final between Cork and Tipperary. The teams will comprise of players drawn from past and present will wear replica playing gear from 1916, that has been specially commissioned for the occasion and the game will be played under 1916 rules. Our special guest on the day is the legendary Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh who will speak about the evolution of hurling and cumann luthchleas gael since 1916.
Immediately following the match, there will be a special reception held in Reardens Bar, in honour of the late John Egan who passed away on 8th April 2012. John was a former Kerry Footballer who won six All-Ireland’s for his county.
During the memorial, friends and sporting colleagues including Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Niall Cahalane, will share stories and reminisce on John’s finest achievements. On the day we will have an irreplaceable exhibition of memorabilia belonging to John. As well as honouring John’s memory, we will be fundraising to cover the cost of erecting a permanent monument to him in his home town of Sneem, Co. Kerry.
