Anxo Lorenzo, Dónal O’Connor, Jack Talty & Jim Murray at Triskel - presented by Music Network
Anxo Lorenzo, Dónal O’Connor, Jack Talty & Jim Murray Live at Triskel on Wednesday 22 January 2020. Presented by Music Network
Over the past ten years, Anzo Lorenzo, Dónal O’Connor, Jack Talty and Jim Murray have been at the forefront of highly creative Galician and Irish music-making – as players, composers, arrangers, accompanists, producers and record label owners. Their individual talents as working musicians have seen them initiate hundreds of thoughtful and innovative projects, and the set list on this tour will include a Music Network commission from all four performers, their virtuosity and profound understanding of the music underpinning any daring off-piste exploration they might undertake.
Add to that a sharp intelligence and gentle curiosity about where this music sits in the world, how it relates to the world outside, and you have a quartet of artists who have made a massive contribution to music, in both local and international arenas.
Thrilling, soulful, sincere and highly communicative, theirs is a music of people and place, of confluence, and of us.

Anxo Lorenzo is a virtuoso award-winning Galician piper who has toured extensively throughout the major European festival circuit, having featured in WOMAD, Cambridge Folk Festival, Celtic Connections, Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Ortigueira, Cork Folk Festival, William Kennedy Piping Festival, to name but a few. His exceedingly high octane, mesmerizing performances have left audiences in euphoria, becoming a modern entry in the lore of many of these long established events. Reciprocally, he has been decorated with festival awards (the latest being the distinguished Folkherbst Award) and regularly features in official festival CD charts (more often completely selling out of stock before a tour’s end). In addition to fronting his own band, Anxo has collaborated with such prestigious artists as Lúnasa, The Chieftains, Kathryn Tickell, Jarlath Henderson, Michael McGoldrick, Blackie O´Connell, Diarmaid Moynihan, Ross Ainslie, to name a few.
Anxo has introduced the gaita pipes to an extraordinarily wide array of music genres. Early in his career he co-founded the electronic fusion band, Spiritu 986, and has since merged with top tier artists across jazz, pop, rock, Indian classical, and flamenco. In addition, he has been invited to international conservatories and cultural centres to present masterclasses and performance workshops to learners and enthusiasts of all levels. One of those rare breed of artiste entertainers, Anxo is at home among his audience, with an increasingly large and loyal following returning to hear what beyond belief sounds like!
“the incredible Anxo Lorenzo” Fatea Magazine
“a combination of sheer speed and unbridled imagination that simply defies belief!” Geoff Wallis at the Irish Music Review.
It is a difficult task to define a musician simply through the use of words and especially so when the musician is Anxo Lorenzo. An artiste who has all the qualities that enable him to touch the essence of music itself, marking it with his own personality and moulding it at his whim achieving the spectacular results on show in his new album, Vortex.
In his universal experience as a piper, he has collaborated in many musical projects fusing the traditional sound of the pipes with a great array of styles and genres from jazz to electronic, pop, rock, or flamenco. In his hands, the pipes are unfettered and endowed with endless possibilities thanks to his genial flair.
Son of the celebrated fiddler Gerry O’Connor (Skylark, Kinvara) and renowned singer Eithne Ní Uallacháin (Lá Lugh), Dónal O’Connor has inherited a great musical legacy of at least five generations of fiddle playing. Highly regarded as a fiddle player, he was asked, at the tender age of twenty one, to take part in the prestigious ‘Music Network Tour of Ireland’ alongside Scottish Guitarist Tony McManus, Fermanagh purveyor of song Gabriel McArdle and Belfast Piper John McSherry (Lúnasa, Coolfin, Tamalin).
“O’Connor’s winning blend of pace and lyricism transmits his enthusiasm for the music directly to the listener with irresistible impact” – Herald Scotland
Dónal’s playing was described recently by The Irish Times as “immaculate”, “electrifying” and “…borne out of naked talent and consummate professionalism…”, and by The Scotsman as “exquisite”. He has toured Europe and the USA extensively from a young age as both a lead and backing instrumentalist with a number of bands including Lá Lugh.
Regarded as “one of the outstanding players of his generation” by J.B. Vallely, recent collaborations have included tours with Lúnasa, Guidewires, Buille and Cathal McConnell, television performances with The West Ocean String Quartet and the legendary Sligo Flute player Séamus Tansey, recording with Brian Kennedy and Moya Brennan of Clannad and festival appearances with Liam Ó Maonlaí and the Steve Cooney Big Band.
Despite a hectic touring schedule, Dónal found time to produce Gerry O’Connor’s long awaited solo album Journeyman, which was released in the Autumn of 2004 to great critical acclaim.
“rhythmic, trance-inducing fiddle work” – popmatters.com
Dónal has also presented a number of music programmes on BBC Radio Ulster and was the presenter of BBC Northern Ireland’s excellent 10-part music series ‘An Stuif Ceart’. Described as a rare musical treat, the series incorporated an eclectic mix of talent with such luminaries as John Prine and Henry McCullough alongside the cream of Irish talent. More recently Dónal recorded Tripswitch with John McSherry. Described as ‘Acoustic Perfection’ by Living Tradition and ‘Medicine for the soul’ by The Irish Music Magazine, Folk Roots said “There’s probably not been such an innovative album released on the green island since Lúnasa’s The Merry Sisters of Fate and Tripswitch probably shatters more boundaries.”
Currently a member of the much acclaimed At First Light, Dónal collaborated with John McSherry and the legendary American slide guitarist Bob Brozman, to release Six Days in Down in October 2010. Influential BBC broadcaster DJ Ritu has described the album as: “One of the most impressive CDs to fly through my letter-box this year”, while Ian Kearney of Roots Magazine has deemed the album “a joyous fusion” whilst Siobhan Long of The Irish Times gave the album a four-star rating, heralding it as a “Strapping collection of tunes”.
“O’Connor’s bowing is beautifully economical, a pleasure to watch as well as to listen to,” – Journal of Music
