Greening Our City - The Missing Link: Food System Planning for Urban Health and Food
Cork Chamber has teamed up with SHEP Earth Aware, Green Spaces for Health, Cork Healthy Cities and the Environmental Research Institute, UCC for this informative webinar series to showcase examples from other countries and discuss the many ways we can make Cork a greener city!
This session will outline the what it means to centre the voices of underserved communities in building sustainable and resilient urban food systems. What role can planners and urban policymakers play in promoting food security? We invest in public libraries and public health care infrastructure, yet why do we not consider public food infrastructures such as urban farms and community gardens as essential services in urban centres?
Dr.Tammara Soma, Assistant Professor, School of Resource and Environmental Management (Planning), Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, Canada will answer these questions and highlight the importance of food system planning for biodiversity, for food security, for mental health, as well as for spiritual well-being. She will highlight the role that cities and policymakers can play in engaging communities to take part in food system planning through a citizen science-based study.
Dr Soma will share the results of a Canadian study entitled “ Our Home, Our Food, Our Resilience" applying a citizen science led food asset mapping with participants from Indigenous and diverse communities in the City of Vancouver, British Columbia to spark food for thought for a more just and sustainable for system.
