Irene's Ghost: part of First Fortnight festival
Triskel Arts Centre in association with First Fortnight and Cork International Film Festival present a special screening of the documentary Irene’s Ghost. First Fortnight is a charity that challenges mental health prejudice through arts and cultural action.
Dir: Iain Cunningham – UK – 2018 – 78mins
Irene’s Ghost follows a son’s search to find out about the mother he never knew. Iain was 3 when his mother Irene died. His Dad never spoke about it, and the family silence around Irene meant that she was alive only in Iain’s imagination. Later in life, the birth of his own child inspires a journey to discover the truth about Irene, piecing together fragments of the past to uncover a long held family secret. Using animation mixed with filmed footage, Irene’s Ghost explores memory and mental health to movingly rebuild a lost life.
There will be a post-screening discussion – full details to come.
First Fortnight works to create a consistent space in the cultural calendar where citizens can be inspired through arts events and experiences to talk about mental health issues in a non-scripted manner. They utilise unscripted conversation to change people’s perceptions about the ordinary experience of a mental health problem and the less ordinary experience of mental ill health. First Fortnight also runs a Centre for Creative Therapies, offering creative therapy to those suffering from mental ill health at risk of or currently homeless.
