Triskel are delighted to host the 2019 Luminous Void Experimental Film Festival (LVEFF) on Friday 6 December. This is Ireland’s only festival wholly dedicated to experimental cinema and the screenings at Triskel will feature not one, not two but FOUR world premieres by filmmakers associated with Experimental Film Society. This festival is an Experimental Film Society project under the artistic direction of Rouzbeh Rashidi and Maximilian Le Cain.
Autumnal Sleeps NC
75 mins – Ireland 2019 – Experimental – Dir: Michael Higgins
Starring: Alain Servant, Natasha Everitt, Ambra Gatto Bergamasco, Henrik Gard
Autumnal Sleeps consolidates Michael Higgins’ reputation as Experimental Film Society’s virtuoso celluloid alchemist. Photographed on expired 35mm film with a 50 year old Soviet camera, this visually dazzling phantasmagoria takes inspiration from early silent cinema. The characters and the nature of performance in it resemble those of a roadshow attraction while highlighting the illusory power of voyeurism and exhibitionism. As in an unrestored film of early cinema, the image flickers and the colours bleed creating a powerful psychedelic sensation.

I Wake Up Screaming (directed by Chris O’Neill, 12 mins): Chris O’Neill continues his series of found footage inquiries into the haunting power of the cinematic image with I Wake Up Screaming. Images from a little-seen and underrated masterpiece of 1970s genre cinema are twisted and distorted into an unrecognisable new vision. This assault on the senses is heightened by an intense soundtrack from Texas-based rock ‘n’ roller Gabbie Bam Bam. Both films are world premieres. Michael Higgins and Chris O’Neill will be present for a post screening Q&A.
KINO CLINIC (NC)
60 mins – Ireland 2019 – Experimental – Dir: Jann Clavadetscher
Starring: Jessica Clavadetscher, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Anthony Belton
Jann Clavadetscher brings his trademark combination of intense visual experimentation and impish humour to Kino Clinic, the second part of his self-described Cine-Medical trilogy. Like its predecessor, Kino Hospital (2017), it is an assault on narrative, genre and the sensorium. In it the evil Dr. Baron Von Mertzbach (Rouzbeh Rashidi) gets a taste of his own medicine while lethal bacteria multiply explosively and form colonies around his castle. Amidst the mayhem, the echoes of scientists play hide and seek with the audience.

Blood in the Butter (directed by Shelly Kamiel, 21 mins): In Blood in the Butter, Shelly Kamiel invites viewers into an intense personal vision that is as unsettling as it is visually enticing. Melt into a fluid of vibrant luscious lunacy. Memories become power and melt down into a weapon. The source of that power becomes so electrified that it becomes everything.
Both films are world premieres. Jann Clavadetscher will be present for a post screening Q&A.
