Pee-wee’s Big Adventure: The Fantastical Cinema of Tim Burton

Tim Burton made his feature film debut with this riotously quirky comedy in which Pee-wee Herman’s bicycle, the “neatest” bike in the world, is missing. It is his most prized possession … and he has got to get it back. So begins a madcap adventure as Pee-wee hits the open road and meets bikers, cowboys, an escaped convict and the phantom trucker known as “Large Marge” in his quest to find his treasured bicycle. The teaming of the comedy stylings of Paul Reubens and the unique visual style of Burton make PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE not only one of the filmmaker’s very best films, but one of the best American comedies of the eighties.

The Fantastical Cinema of Tim Burton 

Tim Burton is a filmmaker with a unique cinematic vision in that his films often blend elements of gothic fantasy with whimsy and surrealism. Triskel Arts Centre is delighted to present Burton’s first five feature films, which will be screened over five consecutive Saturday evenings this August: there is madcap comedy with PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE, the macabre black comedy with the original BEETLEJUICE, the comic book hero adaptations BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS, and the bittersweet fairytale that is EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.
