Smart City Technologies and Data Privacy Event

A seminar ‘Getting Smarter about Smart Cities: Smart city technologies and data privacy’, hosted by Minister for Data Protection, Dara Murphy T.D. will take place on Friday, 9 December 2016. This event will take place from 9.30 am – 2.00 pm in Millennium Hall, Cork City Council.

Smart city technologies are helping to make our cities more efficient, productive and sustainable, and most importantly, better places in which to live and work.

However, these technologies also generate vast quantities of data about the people in these cities, much of it in real-time and highly detailed form. Such data can be put to many good uses, but they also raise a number of concerns and challenges with respect to data privacy, data protection, and data security.

The keynote address Privacy and Security in Smart Cities will be provided by Professor Lilian Edwards, a leading researcher in the area from the School of Law at Strathclyde University. Professor Rob Kitchin of the Programmable City project at Maynooth University will present on the key findings and recommendations of his report Getting Smarter about Smart Cities commissioned by the Government Data Forum earlier this year.
