Stephen Doyle is an artist exploring issues of queer identity through an examination of the relationship between figuration and the politics of representation. He makes paintings in the tradition of realism, depicting subjects within everyday settings in a naturalistic manner, although the painted scenes look staged.
The paintings often include objects such as metal rods, fabric, neon light and ceramics – elements that emphasise their underlying ‘theatricality’. This exhibition features new works addressing LGBTQIA+ autonomy in China, specifically the historic and current restrictive social structures with respect to queer culture.
Stephen Doyle is an artist based in Cork. He studied at CIT Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork. He has had solo shows at Lavit Gallery, Cork, and SO Fine Art Editions, Dublin. He was awarded the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize and the Sunny Art Prize, and was shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize, National Gallery of Ireland. His work is in the collection of the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork.
Stephen Doyle has been supported by a Cork City Council Twinning Grant to realise this project.
