The 63rd Cork Film Festival 2018

The 63rd Cork Film Festival 2018

The 63rd edition of Cork Film Festival, Ireland’s first and largest film festival, runs 9th-18th November with a feast of Irish and international film. The Irish programme is particularly strong this year, with the Festival opening with Cork director Carmel Winters’ highly-anticipated ‘Float Like a Butterfly on Friday 9th November’, and Yorgos Lanthimos and Element Pictures’ latest collaboration ‘The Favourite’ starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz screening the following day on Saturday 10th of November.

Other Irish highlights:

Irish Western ‘The Dig’ starring Moe Dunford follows Callahan who is released after serving a 15 year murder sentence and returns to his family farm intending to sell it. However, the victim’s father, convinced that his daughter is buried on the farm, will not leave Callahan’s land until every patch of earth has been dug up and checked. Knowing it’s the only way to get the father off his land, Callahan joins him in his digging. Actor Moe Dunford, directors Andy and Ryan Tohill, and producer Brian Falconer will attend post-screening Q&As.

‘The Curious Works of Roger Doyle’ is Brian Lally’s directorial debut and a homage to avant-garde Irish composer Roger Doyle, who is known as ‘The Godfather of Irish Electronica’ and who crafted soundtracks for many Irish films in the 70s. In this documentary, Doyle embarks on Ireland’s first electronic opera. Doyle will precede the screening with a brief performance, and Brian Lally will attend a post-screening Q&A.

Themes of love, loss and identity are explored in Viko Nikci’s mystery thriller ‘Cellar Door’, about a woman who does not know who or where she is, and who searches for the baby she may or may not have had, and who may have been taken from her. Director Viko Nikci, actor Karen Hassan and producer David Collins will attend a post-screening Q&A.

There will be an In Conversation event with radical Irish filmmaker Pat Murphy, Film Artist in Residence at UCC, hosted by Vanessa Gildea of Women in Film and Television Ireland, to follow a screening of Murphy’s debut feature ‘Maeve’ (1981).

There are also six dedicated programmes of Irish Shorts screening at the Festival. Cork Film Festival is an Academy-Award® qualifying Festival, and the winner of the Grand Prix Irish Short Award will be longlisted for the Oscars®.
