The Mattachine Family: LGBTI+ Awareness Week
Cork marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) each year with LGBTI+ Awareness Week, reaffirming a commitment to equality, inclusion, and solidarity.
This year Cork LGBTI+ Inter Agency and Triskel Arts Centre present a special screening of the comedy drama THE MATTACHINE FAMILY. When their foster child reunites with his birth mother, husbands Thomas and Oscar’s paths begin to diverge. Oscar’s acting career finally picks up, taking him out of state for filming for months at a time. Meanwhile, Thomas begins a journey of self-discovery, trying to figure out what he wants from life and what it means to be gay today. Loosely based on director Andy Vallentine and writer Danny Vallentine’s own lived experiences as husbands and potential fathers, THE MATTACHINE FAMILY tells a story about the universality of love, family, and community.
Preceding THE MATTACHINE FAMILY will be the short film CLAONADH (14 minutes), which explores the hidden queer stories of forbidden love and attraction of Ireland’s past. This short film is presented in association with PRIOSMA Queer Film Festival.
There will be a wine reception before the film. This reception will begin at 17:00 and the screening will start at 17:30. This event is free to attend but ticketed (tickets will be available from Tuesday 12 May at 10:00).
"Skilfully written and brightly well-played."
