Uncharitable Movie Screening & Panel Discussion
As the representative body for Ireland’s leading and professional charities, Charities Institute Ireland will host a screening of a new film ‘Uncharitable’. The film challenges some long-standing preconceptions about how the sector should be resourced.
Directed by Stephen Gyllenhall and featuring actor Ed Norton, the film provides us with the opportunity to look at this topic anew. Dan Pallotta, whose lifetime commitment to championing the charity sector the documentary is based on, has spearheaded a long-running campaign in the US to change perceptions about indirect/overhead costs.
There is considerable benefit for everyone who uses or funds the services that charities operate effectively, efficiently and in compliance with all company, financial and regulatory laws. Investing in solid operating structures and systems is vital to the success of a charity’s efforts. Unfortunately, misunderstandings about how charities work, and ill-informed criticism about overhead costs has led to a situation where many charities are under-investing in key areas, causing the cycle of underfunding to continue. We believe it is crucial now to come together and consider how we change this status quo.
Following the screening, there will a panel discussion and we will be joined by Dermot Kavangh, CEO of Cork Simon and Board member of Cii, Aisling Meagher, Head of Not-for-Profit Assurance Practice at PWC, Dee Butler, Head of Growth at Submit.com and Áine Myler, CEO of Cii to share their insights and perspective on this important topic.
We hope that business leaders and charities can join us for what promises to be an insightful and thought-provoking discussion on changing the narrative for the Irish charity sector.
