Understanding Unconscious Bias in the Workplace

Understanding Unconscious Bias in the Workplace

Unconscious Bias is a part of everyday life and is ever present on an individual level, team level and organisational level. Biases can lead to poor decision making, automatic behaviours, discrimination and inequality in the workplace. By becoming aware of these Biases, we can effectively make more informed decisions that positively impact our businesses success.

Orla Berkery is Director & Founder of Dragonfly Coaching & Career Services. In her role, Orla works with both business and individuals as a Strategic Leadership and Executive Coach specialising in the support and development of leaders from senior level management to CEO. This is done through the wide range of programmes she has developed for Dragonfly Coaching, from Diversity & Inclusion to Female Leadership Development and New Parent Coaching.
Orla works with companies who place diversity and inclusion at the core of their businesses.
Having over 20 years extensive multinational and multi-sectoral experience in Strategic Human Resource Management, Executive Coaching and Talent Management in global organisations, SME’s and NGO’s, Orla’s experience allows her to understand the individual needs of her clients together with the strategic perspective of the business. This position informs her understanding of people, systems and the cultural dynamics within organisations. Having particular expertise in the unique challenges of female leaders within organisations, she has built her business around the ongoing drive for diversity in business. She believes that success is driven through diversity.
Businesses that are aware of unconscious biases, can effectively take steps to counteract it. Businesses that are aware of these biases can take progressive steps to counter it, thus creating more inclusive workplaces, that thrive on diversity. They: attract better talent, retain key skills, are more innovative in strategy & product development and often more profitable.

The first step in creating a workplace that is progressive and inclusive and successful, is through understanding and acknowledging Unconscious Bias and how it can be a driver or impediment to success.
