Vyshyvanka Day – Ukrainian Folk Tradition with Viktoria Kondratieva and Sample Studios
On 15 May, Ukrainians celebrate Vyshyvanka Day, a holiday devoted to preserving the Ukrainian folk tradition of creating richly embroidered ethnic clothing. This 15 May from 12-2pm, join Viktoria Kondratieva, Cork-based Ukrainian artist, to celebrate Vyshyvanka Day at Triskel Arts Centre in this FREE public workshop!
Visitors will be guided by Viktoria in screen printing custom T-shirts in the Vyshyvanka style, inspired by the iconic embroidered patterns that honour Ukrainian heritage. After that, dive into the world of Petrykivka painting – the beautiful, colourful folk art of Ukraine. You will learn about its floral designs and symbolism, and then decorate your Vyshyvanka-style T-shirt with your own touch of Petrykivka magic. Come create, connect and celebrate the beauty of Ukrainian traditions in a modern way.
About the Artist
Viktoria Kondratieva is a visual artist based in Cork. Kondratieva is from Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, Ukraine. Viktoria was invited to be a part of Cork Printmakers Young Print Collective funded by Cork City Council. She is a participant of Sample-Studios’ Studios of Sanctuary programme. Viktoria’s artistic journey began in her early years, inspired by the rich tapestry of Ukrainian folklore and the intricate patterns of Petrykivka painting. She is a self-taught artist. Later, she discovered her passion for screen printing. Combining these two distinct art forms, Viktoria developed a signature style that marries the meticulous detail of Petrykivka motifs with the bold, graphic qualities of screen printing. She is mentored by Cork printmaker Debbie Godsell through the Studios of Sanctuary Programme.
This event is part of Triskel Sample Project Space, a new partnership between Triskel Arts Centre and Sample-Studios that provides a visual arts project space for artists, especially emerging and mid-career artists, to test ideas and to develop new work that can be seen by the public. This offers tangible career development and audience engagement opportunities to artists on their ‘home turf’ where they have a safe space to develop new ideas, within which risk-taking is possible.
