12th annual ‘Make Your Mark on Cancer’ charity walk raises €54,906 for Mercy Cancer Appeal

Over 380 walkers took to the roads from The Viaduct to Bandon on July 13th, for the 12th annual ‘Make Your Mark on Cancer’ charity walk, raising an incredible €54,906 for the Mercy Cancer Appeal.

Since the first walk in 2013, the event has raised more than €621,000 to support cancer services at Mercy University Hospital.

Rachel Stevenson, CEO of Mercy Hospital Foundation, said: “Cancer touches every family in some way. Events like ‘Make Your Mark on Cancer’ remind us of the power of community and compassion in helping the Mercy Hospital Foundation deliver hope, care, and support to those who need it most. Every step taken, and every euro raised, goes directly toward improving care and comfort for patients and their loved ones on a cancer journey at ‘The Mercy’.”

Testicular cancer awareness remains a key focus of the organising committee, and an ongoing educational programme in schools continues to be supported through the funds raised. One such school is St. Brogan's School, Bandon where the unique educational sessions equip young male students with the knowledge to detect symptoms early and seek help.

Transport for the event was generously sponsored by McCarthy Coaches, bringing many walkers from Bandon to the start line, and returning other participants to Cork afterwards. Refreshment stops along the route were kindly sponsored by Danielle's Fast Food, Dessie Lighting, SuperValu Bandon, and O'Sullivan’s Centra, Innishannon, keeping walkers hydrated and energised. At the finish line in Bandon, the Town Hall welcomed everyone with tea, coffee, sandwiches, cakes, and biscuits, all generously donated by local businesses and individuals who continue to support the cause year after year.

Chair of the ‘Make Your Mark on Cancer’ committee, Damien Prendergast said “We are so grateful to every walker, donor, sponsor, and volunteer who continues to support Make Your Mark on Cancer, and make it the successful fundraiser that it is. The annual walk is a testament to community, connection, and the incredible strength of people coming together for a shared purpose.”
