Better Workday 2024 Survey Report Highlights Rising Employee Frustration and Workload Pressures in Hybrid Environments

The newly released Better Workday 2024 Survey Report reveals significant challenges facing employees in Ireland as hybrid work continues to evolve. The report highlights growing frustration with workloads, an increase in longer work hours, and the urgent need for stronger managerial support and communication practices within hybrid teams.

Key Findings:

1. Rising Frustration Among Employees:
Over 44% of respondents expressed frustration with their workloads, reflecting a noticeable increase in dissatisfaction since 2022. This frustration, combined with a drop in the percentage of employees feeling energised, signals mounting stress in the workplace, with many employees feeling overburdened and constantly distracted.

2. More Employees Working Longer Hours:
The survey reports a growing trend of longer workweeks, with over half (53.2%) of respondents working between 40-50 hours a week and 10.6% working 50-70 hours—nearly double the number from 2022. This surge in extended work hours raises concerns about employee burnout, particularly in hybrid settings where work-life boundaries can blur.

3. Urgent Need for Intentional Communication and Collaboration:
Many employees reported gaps in communication and collaboration, especially in hybrid models. The lack of well-defined processes for managing meetings, communication channels, and asynchronous collaboration suggests a need for more structured approaches to help teams work together effectively.

4. Managers Require More Support and Training:
The report highlights a critical need for better managerial support, with respondents calling out a lack of training in workload management, resource allocation, and stress management. Many managers are struggling to balance team needs, especially in hybrid work environments, pointing to a skills gap that must be addressed to prevent further employee disengagement.

The Better Workday 2024 Survey Report underscores the need for organisations to rethink how they support their teams, especially in the areas of communication and managerial development. By investing in clearer processes and leadership training, businesses can help alleviate pressure on employees and foster a healthier, more productive work environment.

Niamh Moynihan, founder of Better Workday, commented:
"The survey highlights the growing demands on employees and managers alike in hybrid environments. Organisations must act now to create intentional communication strategies and provide managers with the tools they need to support their teams effectively. A better workday starts with clear direction and support for everyone involved."
