“Cork Chamber Member Captures the Spirit of the City as This Year’s Holly Bough Cover Artist”
Now in its 128th year, The Holly Bough has become a cherished part of Christmas for many in Cork and across the world. The cover art on this year’s edition was created by Cork visual artist Sue Nelson.
The piece, entitled Lighting the Way Home, draws inspiration from Cork’s docklands and port, an urban landscape familiar to those who left its shores and to those who have found their way back again.
For Sue, capturing the stories of people and their connection to place is a genuine privilege. A photographer and visual artist, her work often tells the story of moments and places where memories were made.
She says the most meaningful part of her work is seeing how a piece can resonate deeply with someone, how it can stir a sense of belonging or remembrance.
Sue said she was honoured to create the artwork for this year’s edition.
“As a Cork artist who loves this city, it means a great deal to see my work become part of a tradition that connects generations of Cork people, both here and around the world. The Holly Bough has always captured the warmth, pride, and spirit of Cork at Christmas, so to contribute to that legacy feels incredibly special.”
Sue’s latest exhibition is currently on display at Cork City Hall from 10th November to 1st December. The collection showcases her evocative Cork-inspired artworks and photography, celebrating the city’s heritage, beauty, and enduring spirit.
