Cork Chamber welcomes critical infrastructure designation for Cork Area Commuter Rail

Cork Chamber, the voice of business in Cork, has welcomed Government’s designation of the Cork Area Commuter Rail programme as critical infrastructure, paving the way for accelerated delivery of this vital development for the region.

Cork Chamber Director of Public and International Affairs, Cathal McSweeney, said, “Designation of the Cork Area Commuter Rail programme as critical infrastructure marks an important step towards delivery of this strategically important project.

“Cork’s population is projected to grow by 50% by 2040. However, this growth requires investment in enabling infrastructure now to ensure the region’s potential is realised in the years to come, supporting Cork’s role as the economic driver of the southern region.

“Cork Area Commuter Rail has a key role to play in unlocking lands for housing and industrial development across Cork’s northside, as well as supporting continued population growth along the rail corridor in east Cork. The programme includes new stations, improved service frequency and capacity, electrification of the network, and enhanced park and ride facilities, all of which are crucial to improve accessibility and encourage uptake of more sustainable transport options.

“The programme is a key element of the integrated, multi-modal transport network needed in a growing city region such as Cork. While designation of the Cork Area Commuter Rail programme as critical infrastructure is welcome, it is vital that progress continues on other projects of strategic importance for the region, including Luas Cork, the Cork Northern Distributor Multi-modal Route and BusConnects Cork.

“Prioritising delivery of these key projects will ensure that Cork is equipped to meet the needs of projected population growth and economic development, enhancing the region’s overall competitiveness and supporting its role in the national economy.

“Designation of the project as critical infrastructure will enable Cork Area Commuter Rail to benefit from streamlined delivery processes, helping to fast track this strategically important project.”
