Cork Chamber welcomes progress on vital M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Road Project

Cork Chamber, the voice of business in Cork, has welcomed today’s approval by Cabinet of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road project. The M28 is a key project of strategic importance for the Cork region, and Cork Chamber welcomes the commitment by Government to progress the construction phase of the project without delay following today’s approval.

CEO of Cork Chamber, Conor Healy, welcomed the Cabinet approval today: “The M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy route is a vital infrastructure project for Cork City and County and today’s announcement that it is to progress to the construction phase immediately is very welcome. It is vital that this key project is delivered on budget and without delay, in line with Government’s projected three-year construction timeframe.

“This much-needed project will be transformative for the region, replacing existing infrastructure that is no longer fit-for-purpose given the expansion of both industry and population in the surrounding area. The M28 will be vital for the Port of Cork in particular, helping to facilitate the Port’s move from the city centre to Ringaskiddy. This will in turn open up land in the South Docklands for regeneration, and the construction of housing and other essential amenities, and will allow for the growth of the offshore renewables sector.”

Rob Horgan, President of Cork Chamber, said, “Infrastructure improvements are critical to enhancing Ireland’s economic competitiveness, and the delivery of the M28 will play an important role in securing the Cork region’s competitiveness into the future. For businesses already operating in the region, as well as those seeking to invest, the timely delivery of this project will be vital.

“The project will also have a positive impact on road safety, particularly for communities along the route, reducing traffic congestion in surrounding areas and facilitating other developments in public transport provisions and multi-modal, active travel options.”
