Cork Chamber welcomes Progress towards Docklands Regeneration

Cork Chamber, the voice of business in Cork, has welcomed the announcement of government approval for the preliminary business case for the Cork City Docklands Enabling Infrastructure Investment Programme. As the largest regeneration project in the country, the Cork Docklands has a vital role to play in enabling population growth and encouraging economic development, both regionally and nationally.

Cork Chamber CEO, Conor Healy, said, “Approval of the Cork City Docklands Enabling Infrastructure Investment Programme marks an important milestone towards the overall delivery of the Cork Docklands project. This investment will lay the groundwork for the development of housing for up to 25,000 people and will support up to 25,000 jobs in the Docklands.

“With Cork’s population projected to grow considerably in the coming decades, the Docklands project is an essential economic enabler, delivering housing and facilitating job creation, while enhancing the city’s vibrancy, sustainability and overall regional competitiveness. Considerable progress has been made to date on the transformation of brownfield sites and public amenities in the Cork Docklands, and we look forward to the ongoing delivery of additional infrastructure, housing and amenities to unlock the associated economic benefits.

“Cork Chamber has advocated consistently for the timely delivery of the Docklands project and related infrastructure, and the funding announced today by the Department of Housing and Cork City Council is a welcome step towards delivery of the ambitious programme of projects planned across the 147 hectares of Cork’s Docklands. Given current pressures on construction costs and delivery capacity across the infrastructure sector, continued funding certainty and close coordination between agencies will be essential to ensure the project is delivered on time and in full.”
