Leading Cardiologist Joins Expanding Cardiac Service at Mater Private Cork

Mater Private Cork is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Barry, an internationally trained Consultant Cardiologist and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology to its expanding cardiac service. Dr. Barry brings extensive expertise in advanced cardiac care to the Munster region, strengthening the hospital's growing reputation as a centre of excellence in heart care.

Dr. Barry joins Mater Private Cork following a distinguished tenure at the world renowned Mayo Clinic, and his return marks a significant enhancement to the clinical leadership at the newly opened Mater Private Cork Heart Centre.

Originally from Cork, Dr. Barry completed his medical training in Dublin before relocating to the United States. There, he undertook residency and fellowships in cardi010U and advanced echocardiography at leading institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and the Mayo Clinic, consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the U.S. for cardiovascular care.

Dr. Barry has a particular interest in cardiac imaging and echocardiography, including 3D and strain imaging, intra-procedural echo, and cardiac CT. He has extensive experience managing complex cardiovascular conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension and valvular heart disease.

A passionate educator, Dr. Barry previously served as Associate Program Director of the Cardiology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic and has been heavily involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of clinicians and advancing clinical training in cardiology.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Barry has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, with research interests in cardiac imaging and improving outcomes for patients with complex heart conditions. He continues to hold an academic role as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Barry's appointment follows the recent official opening of the CB Cork Heart Centre, part of a €12 million investment to expand access to expert-led cardiac diagnosis and treatment in Munster. The Heart Centre offers a comprehensive suite of services, including advanced imaging, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and cardiac surgery, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of nationally and internationally trained experts.
