Northside Cork Company SE Systems Shortlisted for National Energy Award

Cork-based SE Systems, a leading one-stop shop for energy-efficient retrofits, has been shortlisted for the 2025 SEAI Energy Awards, recognising its outstanding contribution to sustainable housing and community transformation.

Founded and headquartered on Cork’s northside, SE Systems works with businesses, homeowners and community organisations to deliver complete retrofit solutions, from initial design and grant facilitation to project management and final delivery.

The company’s shortlisted project, Lion House in Douglas, involved a deep energy upgrade for 18 apartments for elderly residents, managed by the Douglas & District Lions Club. Before the works, residents faced high energy bills, poor insulation and limited control over their heating systems.

Transforming Homes and Lives

Through a carefully planned programme of upgrades, SE Systems delivered a full retrofit that significantly improved comfort, affordability and sustainability.

Key results included:

  • 18 apartments upgraded from an average E1 BER to A1, the highest possible energy rating
  • Comprehensive upgrades including air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps, attic and cavity wall insulation, new windows and doors, solar PV systems and mechanical ventilation

The project delivered major energy savings and reduced carbon emissions while giving residents warmer, healthier homes. Some residents have seen their electricity bills cut by more than 75%, with one resident’s bill falling from €150 to just €35.

Powered by Partnership and Local Investment

This landmark project was funded through a partnership between the SEAI Community Energy Grant and the SE Systems Community Fund, which provided almost 95% of the total project funding.

This co-funding approach ensured Douglas Lions Club could complete a comprehensive, future-proof upgrade without creating a financial burden for the organisation or its residents.

Youenn Lowry, Managing Director of SE Systems, commented:

“Being shortlisted for this award is a real honour for our team and a reflection of the difference that can be made when local expertise is matched with national support. The Lions House project is proof that deep energy retrofits can deliver meaningful change, not just for buildings but for the people who live in them. We are proud to play our part in creating a more sustainable future for Cork and grateful to SEAI and Douglas Lions Club for their trust and collaboration.”

A Model for Sustainable Change

The shortlisting recognises SE Systems as a local leader in Cork’s sustainable future, demonstrating how businesses can drive Ireland’s energy transition.

The SEAI Energy Awards celebrate innovation and impact in energy efficiency and renewable energy. The winners will be announced later this year.
