UNICEF Calls for Urgent Support Following Devastating Earthquakes in Venezuela
On Wednesday 24th June, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck in the north of Venezuela shortly after 18:00 local time, followed by a second quake of 7.5 magnitude that struck less than a minute later. Current reports estimate 1,450 people have died, and 3,150 are injured. These earthquakes caused widespread devastation. Buildings and homes collapsed, leaving hundreds dead and thousands more injured. Right now, children are injured, in shock and traumatised. They have lost their homes, their schools and even their families, but they cannot lose their future.
The scale of the humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding. UNICEF estimates that 680,000 children, now require assistance. Critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, water systems and transport networks, has been severely damaged or destroyed, disrupting access to essential services and placing additional strain on already fragile systems.
In response, UNICEF is working with national authorities and humanitarian partners to scale up emergency support. Efforts are focused on delivering essential healthcare, safe water, child protection services, psychosocial support, and temporary education spaces.
The first air shipment from UNICEF's regional warehouse in Panama, carrying 20 tons of medical supplies, WASH items, and tents, arrived in the country on 27 June. A second shipment from UNICEF's central warehouse in Copenhagen, containing 48 tons of additional supplies, is expected to arrive on 30 June.
However, the needs remain significant. Continued support from partners across the private sector and wider business community will be critical to ensure life-saving assistance can reach those most in need.
UNICEF is calling for immediate, flexible funding and sustained engagement to help protect children and support recovery efforts in the weeks and months ahead.
