Watch Before Sunrise Trilogy at Triskel from 6 March

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S 30 YEARS SINCE JESSE AND CÉLINE WANDERED AROUND VIENNA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT?

1995 saw the release of BEFORE SUNRISE, the classic romantic drama starring Julie Delpy (as Céline) and Ethan Hawke (as Jesse), and directed by Richard Linklater. To mark the 30th anniversary of its original release, Triskel Arts Centre is screening not only BEFORE SUNRISE but also its two fine sequels: BEFORE SUNSET and BEFORE MIDNIGHT. The three films are showing on Thursdays in March starting with Before Sunrise on Thursday 6 March. Tickets are on sale now.

The films, set and filmed in nine-year intervals, follow the evolving romantic relationship between Jesse and Céline at three distinct stages of their lives.

Chris O’Neill, Head of Cinema at Triskel, explained his reasons for showing the trilogy. “Each of these pictures are sharply written, finely acted and eloquently directed as they detail the relationship of Jesse and Céline over an 18-year period.”

These films are known for their minimalist style, primarily featuring monologues and casual conversations with long, intricate dialogues between the characters. They explore contrasting views on life, love, time, self-discovery, aging, loss, and parenthood, positioning the trilogy as a study of postmodern romance.

The Before trilogy garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning two Academy Award nominations, two Writers Guild of America nominations, and a Golden Globe nomination for Delpy’s performance in Before Midnight as Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.

Before Sunrise screens on Thursday 6 March with Before Sunset following on Thursday 13 March and Before Midnight on Thursday 20 March.
